Featured in the San Jose Mercury News on the “quandary of playing video games while female”

I was featured in the San Jose Mercury news, discussing issues related to the development side of gaming, when it comes to female representation. The article discussed the recent backlash and hostility directed at female critics, gamers and developers in the industry after high profile attacks and threats directed at female game developers and a popular media critic and blogger, Anita Sarkeesian. While I discussed several recent events and research related to the issue, my direct quote discusses why females are still underrepresented as game characters (recent studies still show they make up less than 20% of playable characters, and are more often featured as secondary or inconsequential characters) and why there’s a general trend toward designing for an assumed male audience.
